  • Paintings on Canvas

We are extensively trained and have vast experience in the conservation and restoration of canvas paintings and panel paintings and can meticulously address the needs of each piece.

Our comprehensive range of services encompasses a variety of art conservation and restoration techniques. These include scientific investigations of paint layers and historical research to uncover the hidden stories behind artworks. We specialize in preserving paintings infested by woodworm through anoxia treatment, and we also excel in stabilizing cracks and open joints in wooden supports, as well as consolidating papier-mâché supports and flaking paint. Our expertise extends to tear repair for canvas paintings, lining and strip-lining of canvas artworks, fine art cleaning, and precise retouching. Additionally, we offer solutions for damaged panels, frame conservation, and gilding. Furthermore, we provide conservation education and valuable advice for practicing artists, along with preparing detailed condition reports and treatment estimates. Our client consultations before artwork purchases ensure informed decisions, and our collection surveys yield maintenance recommendations. Lastly, we prepare comprehensive reports for insurance claims, reinforcing our commitment to preserving art's timeless beauty.

  • Polychrome Sculpture

We are also specialized in the conservation and restoration of painted and gilt sculpture, namely three-dimensional works of art on wood and papier-mâché. These polychrome sculptures have delicate surfaces, sensitive to many of the cleaning agents employed in more typical conservation treatments of sculpture. Their conservation treatment therefore requires great attention and the thoughtful knowledge that we offer. Such projects frequently require an initial phase of analysis of paint and/or gilt surfaces.

  • Books & Paper

Allow us to conserve your valuable works of art on paper. Our museum quality conservation treatments are appropriate for sensitive and delicate collection items.

We offer a comprehensive range of services dedicated to preserving and restoring various forms of art and historical documents. Our expertise covers the conservation and restoration of works of art on paper, including watercolors, prints, drawings, lithographs, letters, documents, photographs, maps, engravings, and manuscripts. We also excel in preserving parchment and leather artifacts, along with fine bindings in Books.

Our techniques include cleaning, washing, de-acidification, repairs, consolidation, and precise re-binding. We can combat both active and inactive mold and provide anoxia treatments for insect infestations. We offer digitization services to preserve content and create tailor-made acid-free boxes and enclosures. Our skilled artisans also excel in fine bindings, featuring leather and marbled paper with intricate gold tooling.

Additionally, we're adept at identifying printing and artistic techniques and providing accurate dating. Entrust your treasures to us, and we'll ensure their lasting legacy through our unwavering dedication to conservation and restoration.

  • Materials Analysis

We can provide in-depth technical examinations, which include visual and scientific analysis of your artifacts in preparation for subsequent treatment. Scientific examination will also aid in establishing the manufacturing technique of the artifact, provenance, age or authenticity. We work closely with local and foreign institutions that can conduct detailed analytical and scientific analysis of your artifacts to establish for example the composition of pigments, binders and coatings. Specific examinations are only done when required or necessary to aid in the conservation of an artifact.

    Services include:

Ultraviolet (UV) light examination: Ultraviolet light detects later restorations that appear darker than the aged original varnish layers. UV can reveal the presence of natural resin varnishes, as these often fluoresce under UV light. It is also possible to identify any overpaintings on top of an aged varnish, since oil paint and newer varnish do not fluoresce under UV. Overpaitings therefore appear as dark patches on the varnish surface.

Infra-red reflectography: Examination of paintings by infrared radiation often reveals changes in composition, damages, fillings and pentimenti. Its most frequent use is in the detection of underdrawing executed with carbon pigments.

X-ray investigation of flat or three dimensional objects: An X-ray can produce widespread information about the construction of paintings on canvas and on wooden panels. X-ray can also provide an alluring window into the picture’s past by revealing what is hidden in the layers of paint. Modifications and later alterations can be seen that are no longer visible to the naked eye.

Polarized light microscopy: cross-sectional analysis, fiber and pigment identification

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR): identification of paint media and coatings.

Scanning electron microscopy & Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS): materials identification and composition.

  • Environmental Monitoring

We also offer environmental monitoring campaigns, which include the temporary installation of small devices for a period of time to evaluate how the environment in a building/ room/niche etc. is affecting your collections, by recording the levels of humidity and temperature present inside. Recommendations for the improvement of the environment and its conditions will be given.
